A while back, I was in a meeting at work. I had my phone handy on the table and the boss was trying to figure out a financial calculation.
He asked me to divide one number INTO another. I was taken aback. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to enter that on my calculator. We were taught to divide BY numbers. Not INTO numbers. What does that even mean?
He could see my confusion and told me what to type in. Of course I felt like a complete idiot especially since I studied math through Calculus III.
Who says divide INTO? Is that some kind of old-timey cipherin’? To this day I have a hard time wrapping my head around it. I should spend some time decoding it in case it ever comes up again.
