How can we protect ourselves from credit card hackers?

crdtcrdsWe are hearing it more often now.  Every day on the news is a report of another business we all spend money with falling prey to credit card hackers.  First it was Target then Macys.  Now the latest victims are hotels like Marriott, Hilton, Sheraton and Westin Hotels.

Our credit card system is inherently insecure and data from our cards is being stored unnecessarily by these businesses.  Once the transaction is complete, there is no need for our numbers, names and even worse, PIN numbers being stored in a database on some unknown computer in control of some unknown IT guy.  As an IT guy myself, I know that a majority of tech workers are not as skilled as they may think they are.

There are many things that need to change in the way we handle credit cards.  I don’t know what the solution is but it is time somebody did something.   In other countries, the credit cards have chips on them and you cannot use the card without having the card there physically.  Maybe it is time to get the chips implanted into our hands.  I would do it if it was more secure.

Maybe we should stop using credit cards.  I may go back to using cash again.  It is more inconvenient but how inconvenient is fighting credit card fraud and identity theft?  Extremely!  I know someone who has had it happen twice and it has ruined her life.

Don’t get me started on the fact that these hackers would even do such a thing in the first place.  Who the hell do they think they are that they can “get rich quick” and not get a job like everyone else.  The fact that these people are out there reflects poorly on humanity in general.  When the aliens come to judge our planet, we are unlikely to pass their approval for inclusion in the Galactic Federation.

You Bastards!

  1. Fraud isn’t the only reason not to use credit cards. Even today, most credit card distributors leave out the ‘you have to pay us back’ part. It’s pretty sad.
