2015 New Years Resolutions

nyres2014 is about to end and a whole fresh new year is about to start.   It’s a great time to wash away all the bad stuff that happened and start anew.

Yeah.  Obviously it’s just the next day in a series of life but one can pretend.

I have one resolution to keep for myself this coming year and that is to learn to have fun.

So many decades of loneliness and self-pity has left me a stick in the mud.  Now that I am a new person I need to learn new skills and having fun is possibly the most important skill ever.  Having fun might be simple to most people but for me it’s a lost art.  I don’t know how I am going to accomplish this amazing feat but I am positive about it.  Starting with an open mind is a great first step.

If I could, perhaps, find someone who can bring out the child in me then life would truly be good.

Yay for fun!

Simpler Times

I like watching old black and white movies and noticing just how simple life was back before technology invaded.  All they had was a phone, light bulbs, fans and maybe a fridge.  Things were done manually with love and thought.

I wonder if in a hundred years from now they will look back at 2014 and marvel about how simple life was for us.

The Amazing Printer Ink Scam

hghprceFor the most part, I’ve given up printing.  If I need to take something with me, I send the link to my phone or tablet.  No problemo.

Unfortunately there is the occasional need to actually print on paper.  I would have thought that would be as out of style as the CD but I see full pages of printers for sale in the Sunday advertisements.  I guess it is still a thing.

I have an old HP Deskjet 930C that someone gave me a few years ago.  The ink cartridges it came with lasted a very long time and gave me good quality prints.  I definitely got my money’s worth on that deal.  Eventually the color ran out and I just printed in B&W.  Now that black is gone too.  I guess it’s time to get some more.

I went to amazon.com to search for new cartridges and was blown away to see that the price for one black ink and one color ink cartridge would cost almost $70.00 plus shipping.  That’s not going to happen.  Have they lost their minds?  It’s just ink. Apparently it is only available freshly squeezed from martian squids.

So what kind of scam are we looking at here?  The best price I could find was $24.00 for the Black cartridge containing 42ml of ink.  Let’s assume the cost for the plastic cartridge is about $5.00.  That means 42ml of ink costs $19.00.   That would mean a gallon of this precious liquid costs $1712.00.    A gallon of gasoline only costs $2.00 right now.  Hmmmmm.  A 55 gallon drum would cost $94,160.   My house is barely worth that.  A barrel of oil is only $59.45.  Sometimes as high as $125.

So what kind of rare earth elements are in this amazing elixir?  Lets’s Google….
Wikipedia says inkjet printer ink is made of water, glycol, dyes and pigments.
These are not expensive chemicals.

So what is going on here?   SCAM!!!!  Why do we allow it?  Isn’t there some kind of government regulatory program to prevent consumers from being ripped off?  If there is then they should look in to the drug scam too.  I guess Big Ink has a good lobbying program.

I ended up just not being able to get myself to throw away that much money on something that should not cost that much.  I went with remanufactured cartridges for half the price and am expecting to have quality issues due to head clogging.  I’m hoping that won’t be a big issue since I don’t print that much.

This whole thing is an amazing scam.  I’m in the wrong business.

It’s just so wrong!  I can’t stand it!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

mctyI really mean it.  Merry Christmas to everyone!

This is perhaps the first Christmas I’ve ever truthfully wished the world well.  Usually I wish for death and destruction for all but I feel as though I am a changed man.  Life is far better for me than it has been in the past and I contribute most of it directly to a change in attitude.   Can it be that simple?  I think perhaps so.

Love and happiness to everyone!  I don’t wish you were dead.

Long Distance Job interview

I just got back from a job interview at a small concrete construction company in a small town outside of the city.  They contacted me after finding my resume on Indeed.com.  The office is small but they have a lot of technology.  There are many different duties that I would be responsible for and that would be nice to keep my days busy.

There are a few cons that I was unable to get around though.

1. The drive. It would be a 48 mile drive each way EVERY DAY.  That’s almost 100 miles a day and two hours of life lost just driving.  I just can’t see myself doing that for the next 10 years.

2. I would be the only tech guy.  Loneliness would kill me.

3. Nowhere to eat lunch.  Lunch is the best part of the day.  There are only two restaurants in town.

There were plenty of pros but the cons were extremely heavy.  I had to turn them down which hurt me to disappoint them.   We didn’t even talk money.  I don’t see how any fair amount of money would be worth it in this situation.  Time is more valuable than money and loneliness is death.

I’m sure it was a good decision.  I just hope this wasn’t the job God sent me in response to my wishes.

Habitat for Humanity, Finally!

h4hI finally managed to get myself to go for my first volunteering at Habitat for Humanity.  I had free time on a Tuesday so I fought the early morning traffic to get to the Habitat warehouse.

On Tues-Thursday they build wall frames inside the warehouse for easy construction on Friday-Saturday.

I was joined by three other people.  Two were wounded veterans along with their physical therapist.  We were able to construct four walls before lunch time.  I had a great time and learned a few things about framing.  By 11:00 it was time for lunch and the others had to leave.  I could have stayed for the rest of the day but was already sore.  Bending over and kneeling can take a lot out of you if you’re out of shape.  Still.  It was awesome!  There’s nothing better than working on something with other people. I get so tired of being alone all the time.  It can really wear you down.

I would like to go again on a Friday or Saturday to help put up some walls to see how to do the next step.  Maybe this weekend if the weather is permitting.  It will take a day or two for the soreness to wear off anyway.

Dear Santa

sntaltr3Dear Santa,

I have been a pretty good boy this year.  Better than many years past.  I don’t want or need a lot although the few things I do need might be out of your league.  However, if you can swing it or maybe put in a good word for me, it would be really wonderful if I could land a really enjoyable job in the next few months.  Something that can make getting up in the morning a happy occasion.

It would be super awesome if I could get a close friend too.

That’s all I need.  If I might ask for a few things for others:

* I would like my sister to stop smoking so she might become healthier.
* World Peace would be great.
* A better job for Martin so he can have a better life.  He deserves it.
* A better job or a nice raise for Lea Ann.  She totally deserves it too.

Thanks for your time and have a great Christmas!

P.S.  My mom just called and said my Aunt is in the hospital for an emergency operation.  Please send a little help her way!  Thanks!
